How was the Holand Tunnel Built?

Construction of the Holland Tunnel began in 1920. At that time, There were two basic ways of building tunnels. One was trenching and the other was using a pneumatic tube or a shield that shoved itself through the mud of the river
bottom. It was decided that the pneumatic shield would be the best way to make the Holland Tunnel because
there was so much traffic on the river, it would be the less destructive process. So one pneumatic shield was
begun from the New Jersey side and another begun on the New York side. The two met up in 1924 but it took another three years for the entire tunnel to be finished and open to general public use.
